Becoming a Kindred Member
What does it mean to be a member of Kindred? Is Kindred a good fit for you? Read below!
Auditions
Kindred has grown! We now require a digital audition for membership to Kindred. Ideally we want your voice to be able to blend with others in the group for a cohesive sound. Once we determine you can carry a tune with confidence and keep your pitch, we will consider singers on a lottery basis. Depending on the time of year, we may not be accepting singers until the following season.
Reading Music
While it helps, you don’t need to be able to read music. We do work from sheet music but you will also receive multi-track recordings of all the parts. These audio references live in a shared Google Drive accessible to all (link forthcoming upon membership) and are a great resource for readers and non-readers when working outside of rehearsal.
Rehearsals
We rehearse every Sunday at a local church (address to be provided upon membership) from 6:30 – 8:00pm during the months of September to May. Doors will be opened at 6:15pm and close at 6:45pm. Kindred has no religious affiliation but our rehearsal space welcomes anyone and everyone through their doors and they are a community rooted in social justice.
Attendance
Regular attendance is important! It’s quite understandable to miss from time to time (life happens!) but the more everyone shows up, the better everything is. With such limited time in our busy lives, it's important to honor the rare opportunity to sing together.
Performances
Kindred's regular season runs from September - May. At the end of the season, we have a season finale in which all proceeds go to a local non-profit/charity of our collective choosing. We also have regular performances throughout the year to share our love of music with the community (e.g., Oro Valley Marketplace). We also engage in smaller community engagement events as well (e.g., potluck dinners, karaoke, community singalongs). Please note that although we hope for critical mass, all performances are optional. The joy of simply singing together on a regular basis may be enough for some.
Communication
We currently use WhatsApp for rehearsal reminders and email for longer information. At some point we may move to a different platform to schedule and distribute information.
Member Dues
We ask for a modest fee of $15 to cover the cost of purchasing arrangements and vocal tracks, printing sheet music, rehearsal space rent, pianist fees, and liability insurance. Included in your membership dues is a Kindred chorus t-shirt for performances (& out on the town!). Preferred forms of payment include Zelle (kindredchorus@gmail.com) or Venmo (@kindredchorus). We also take cash at rehearsals. Fees should not be cost prohibitive! We can implement a sliding scale for those that request it, so please let us know. Alternatively, if you'd like to sponsor another member, you may choose to pay more than $15/month. Although we don't anticipate it, please note that fees may change if/when any of the above costs change.
Merchandise
We also encourage members to support us through our swag site! Check out our shirts, stickers, and other merch here: https://www.wamiswag.com/shops/kindredchorus. For new members, I will collect size information for a "Basic Soft-style T-Shirt" available in unisex or women's sizing (in black), so that is forthcoming upon membership. Otherwise, feel free to purchase for yourself or your family and spread the word!
